What is the national medical weight loss programme?
The National Medical Weight Loss Programme (NMWLP) offers medical support, advice, education and treatment options to help people living with obesity or who are overweight with an associated co-morbidity to lose weight. It is approved by the nursing and obesity associations. All certified partners have undergone detailed training.
The NMWLP is designed to help control your appetite, reduce hunger and cravings, reduce portion sizes and subsequently help you to lose weight. In addition to lifestyle and dietary counselling, it does this by using prescribed medication, that is self-administered at home.
The first step is a full medical consultation with a Registered Nurse and Certified Partner of the NMWLP and will last up to 1 hour. This appointment will explore the weight loss options as well as your over-all health and well-being.
If eligible for medication, this is self-administered at home each week, using an easy-to-use pen that is pre-filled with the medication.
Treatment is then prescribed to take at home, with regular review consultations scheduled throughout the programme to ensure support and safety along your weight loss journey.

Consultation PROCESS and Follow-Up Reviews
A consultation with a medical professional will be used to discuss the programme and determine the most appropriate treatment option for you.
The initial consultation may take up to 1 hour. During this your consultation form will be discussed in detail and a complete medical history taken. You will have body composition measurements taken which include weight, height, waist circumference, muscle mass and body fat percentage. Your blood pressure will also be checked. There may be some circumstances whereby bloods are required prior to treatment. The risks of living with obesity are discussed and advice given to achieve your goals. You will be educated on medical treatment options available and consent obtained prior to prescribing. Treatment options come in the form of a once weekly self-injectable pen.
Immediately after your consultation, a prescription will be ordered. Depending on time of day and day of the week, this may arrive to your home the following working day. As unused pens must be kept refrigerated, it is vital that you are there to receive your delivery. When a pen has been used it can stay at room temperature.
Pharmaceutical prices differ depending on drug strength.
With your consent, a letter will be sent to your GP to inform them that you are undergoing treatment.
You will inform Bespoke Diabetes Care Ltd when you receive your medication and an appointment will be arranged to support you giving your first injection. This may be virtual.
2-3 days after your first injection we will be in touch to see how you are getting on and assess whether you are having any side-effects. In cases of troublesome nausea or vomiting, an anti-emetic may be required.
We will be in touch weekly to check in and offer support if needed.
Whilst on the medication, a follow-up consultation in person is required before each new prescription. 1 month’s dose will be given at a time.
Follow-up consultations include a full re-measure of body composition, assessment of tolerance and goals and a new prescription order of the higher dose of medication.
The average treatment length is 6 months however this can differ. Some people wish to continue on a maintenance dose and some people may decide to discontinue treatment after a set period of time.
